Apprenticeship Case Study – Paige Goodyear

How long have you worked for GMS?

I’ve been working for GMS since the start of December last year. It’s the best thing I ever did moving jobs; not only am I learning new things every day, but it’s also helping me massively with my training routine because I am also a professional boxer.

What apprenticeship programme are you doing?

In September, I’m going to be starting my Business Apprenticeship. This is something I’m really excited about, as I know that it will open so many doors for me in the future.

What made you choose to do an apprenticeship?

Through my boxing, GMS have sponsored me and I got to know the owner, Neil Male. He gave me the opportunity to work for GMS and it didn’t take me long to accept, because doing an apprenticeship would not only give me so much experience, but I knew it would give me some amazing qualifications for the future. In addition to this, when I retire from professional boxing, I need other skills to fall back on.

What aspects do you enjoy most?

Since starting with GMS I think the thing I love most, is that every day is different. I’m so glad I accepted the offer as I love how I’m helping contribute to recruiting 250 people for a massive contract GMS have this Summer.

Have you faced any challenges whilst balancing work and study?

Within the last few months, I’ve faced many challenges, whilst trying to balance not only my full-time job, but also now being a professional boxer is hard work on top of everything else. This is due to me always being on the go and having something to do. However, I believe now I’ve found a great routine which has helped me massively with my boxing, as I’m able to train at least twice a day, whilst also working full time. I can only thank GMS for helping me to fit everything around my busy schedule.

What is your long-term career plan and how do you think your apprenticeship will help you achieve your plan?

My long-term plan is to be successful with my boxing career and become World Champion in the professional ranks. Furthermore, my plan is to carry-on advertising GMS/ Warrens Hall Riding school as I fight Globally around the world within my boxing career. From a work aspect, my plan is to  open up my own Nutritional sports business i.e. helping people with meal prepping, supporting athletes within their career or to support people mentally during their careers.

I believe having my business qualifications under my belt will help me massively in achieving this and to then carry on being a successful businesswoman once I retire from boxing. I believe it is massively important that I have different ideas and plans in my head, as you must always have a plan B, especially from having people around me with great experience and having been there and done it themselves.  They’ve proven to me that anything is possible, even if an injury or accident happens, you can always be successful, if you put everything you have into it and I promise to do just the same
